Should wives get a bonus from their husbands? Let me think about that. Em. No?
That was the gist of my argument when asked to debate the topic on Lorraine against Polly Philips, who annually takes a lump of cash from her husband after giving up work to look after their child. As lovely as she was, the idea I find unpalatable.
I have plenty of pals who are stay at home mums and dip into their joint account… because that’s what marriage is – a partnership. Looking after the kids can be far tougher than a day in the office but to make your arrangement as official as claiming joint access to the money your husband earns as well as a bonus?
Well it seems more like a business plan than a union of trust and love to me.
